Our summer school program begins on June 1, 2026, and runs through July 23, 2026. Classes will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 9:15-11 am. You must attend at least two classes per week. On Thursdays we will have a Conversation Club from 9:30-11 am. This is a great opportunity to practice conversation in small groups and to develop friendships with others.

 

Fall semester begins on August 24, 2026. You will need to register in order to attend. There is a $50 registration fee. Please contact me at bonnie@firstpres.church for more details.

First Presbyterian Church Champaign (FPCC) is committed to helping people who come to our community from other countries as immigrants or visitors. Our English Language Learners (ELL, formerly ESL) Program provides the opportunity for Adult English Language Learners to improve their English fluency and conversational language skills in a setting that encourages community and friendship.Our dedicated volunteer tutors use various resources, to communicate with non-English speakers. In addition, tutors and students have access to many additional resources to enrich more advanced learners.

 

The ELL Program at First Presbyterian Church collaborates with other organizations that are also concerned with the language needs of immigrants and international visitors.

• Our classes are for adults (18 and older) only.
• Our ELL Program provides a safe and enjoyable place to learn English and make new friends. Our classes focus on improving English language skills and acquainting students with American culture. We provide many opportunities for social conversation and pronunciation practice.
• We offer “in-person” classes in the Education Building at First Presbyterian Church, Champaign, IL (FPCC).
• Classes meet on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, from 9:15-11 am. The first half hour is Cafe Time with drinks and snacks and a chance to practice daily conversation. On Thursdays during the summer term, we will have a Conversation Club from 9:30-11 am. for conversational practice.Our teachers are dedicated volunteers who receive training in the use of effective language teaching strategies.Our program does not offer educational credit for any of our classes. While we do a bit of writing and reading, our classes focus on speaking and listening for conversation.
• Our classes are free, but beginning in August 2026 there will be a $50 registration fee for the year.
• In the fall and spring, ELL offers a moms’ class on Wednesdays for mothers with preschoolers. Participants meet in the nursery. The class is a wonderful opportunity for mothers to meet each other and practice conversation.
